Half moon pond, Albury Estate, Guildford.

This brick-lined pond was designed by John Evelyn in the 1660’s and had been empty for some time.

Working with English Heritage we lined the pond first with 50mm of soft sand then a 3mm protective underlay. The waterproofing membrane was a 1mm EPDM liner.

A pump was installed to supply water to the cascade which had originally been supplied from a pond a mile away.

The pond was then planted with large containers of waterlilies.

The project has been a great success and the pond was used as the backdrop for a wedding reception shortly after completion.

After covering the base with 50mm of soft sand the excavation is now ready for the protective underlay and waterproof butyl (EPDM) membrane.
